The aim of this course is to introduce courtyard design as a creative design problem shaped by interior–exterior spatial relations, user experience, environmental comfort and spatial composition.
Students are expected to analyze courtyard typologies, cultural and contemporary precedents, hard/soft landscape decisions, and material-plant-light-shadow relations in order to develop a small-scale courtyard design proposal.
This course examines the courtyard as a semi-open spatial type through historical, cultural, environmental and experiential dimensions. Students study courtyard typologies, context analysis, scale-proportion-circulation decisions, hard/soft landscape components, planting, shade, water, material, lighting and furniture strategies. By the end of the semester, students prepare a design proposal for a given context through concept, plan, section, diagrams, atmosphere studies and presentation boards.
