This course provides a comparative introduction to the myths, legends, and traditional narratives of cultures from around the world. It explores mythology as a means through which societies explain the origins of the universe, nature, humanity, death, morality, social order, and the relationship between humans and the divine. Drawing on myths from ancient and modern cultures, the course examines recurring themes, archetypal figures, symbolic structures, creation narratives, hero journeys, gods and goddesses, tricksters, monsters, and underworld traditions. Particular attention is given to the cultural and historical contexts in which myths emerge and to the ways mythology continues to influence literature, art, popular culture, religion, politics, and contemporary storytelling. Through comparative analysis, students develop an understanding of both the universal patterns and cultural specificities found in world mythology.
