This course involves the mathematical modeling of real-life operational decision problems that can be addressed using operations research techniques. It begins with the formulation of problems suitable for linear programming and progresses to models involving integer and binary decision variables. The role of uncertainty in operational decision-making is also discussed within the context of sensitivity analysis, where changes in input parameters and their effects on optimal solutions are explored.
Basic computational tools for solving the resulting models are introduced, with a particular focus on Excel Solver. This tool enables students to build, solve, and analyze mathematical models in a spreadsheet environment, reinforcing the connection between model formulation and solution interpretation.
