While "women's human rights" are now part of the international human rights discourse, it has taken many years of advocacy for this idea to be recognized as a legitimate dimension of the international human rights system.  This course aims to discuss the two most comprehensive concepts of gender equality and women's rights from a philosophical and ethical perspective. While the focus of the course is not on examining the issue from the perspective of international human rights law, reference will be made to international human rights instruments and conventions in order to better grasp the concepts and problems. The two main objectives of the course are to examine and clarify critical concepts such as equality, justice, intersectionality, cultural relativism, "right" and rights, and to understand the centrality of gender equality for human rights in general.
